Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling Empty Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling

Post by Bryan Krueger Tue Apr 09, 2013 5:04 am

A few weeks ago when it was too cold to AB the V1 out in the unheated garage, I plunged into another project. Mad It's loosely based on a photo I found of a flak mounted on a 1.5 ton light truck. I'm not sure what the vehicle is in inset photo but I used what I had to get something in the same vain. I picked up the Tamiya Steyr kit last year for $5 at a local show. It looked like such a nice easy build. The Drilling came from the AFV Club kit which I bought to build the infantry vehicle version. The Flak trailer comes from the Dragon "Gepard" kit which again I picked up for a song at a local show.

I used the Eduard set and styrene to spruce up the model some without going overboard.

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling Steyr_01

The trailer will be full of crap.

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling Steyr_02

It looks tight but the gunner has more room than in the 251.

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling Steyr_03

I'm pretty happy with the wood grain on the styrene boards and might replace the basswood ones in the car.

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling Steyr_04

As far as details that will never be seen. I turned the wheels

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling 1500_05

And added something that looks like an engine through the mesh

    Steyr 1500/01 with MG151 Drilling 1500_04

I have a few questions regarding the Drilling and Figure. Hopefully someone can help.

    1) Where did the shell casings go? It looks like chutes direct the casings into the cone. How are these cleaned out?
    2) Does anyone make ammo belts for the Drilling? The AFV belts have some mold slip and the rounds are out of alignment. Very sad.
    3) Is there a resin figure with the same attire and similar static pose with long coat as either the Tamiya figure or the guy in the photo?

I think I'll finish this in a three color camo with whitewash remnants. I might replace the kit tires with aftermarket ones.

    Hy Brian!

Excellent! Steyr vehicles are one of my favorits, especially when done so nicely. Looking forward to the paintjob.

Could you explain a little bit how you turned the wheels. I´ve a long time project running and this would work out perfect with it.

    Greetings

    Thanks Maarten and Tobias.

Roland. Thanks. To turn the wheels, I had to cut the linkages and hubs into their individual components. I drilled out the hub and axle and inserted pre-bent wire to turn the wheels. I put the wheels back on and made sure they were parallel and vertical before the glue set. That was the hardest part. I then glued together the linkages. Two of the tie rods are styrene rod because the kit parts weren't matching up with the gap. I then re-sculpted the rubber cover which helped to hide the cut.

But don't fret too much. I could have used bluetack for as visible as all my work is.

Making some progress. I decided to go with a worn white wash. Effect was created with Tamiya acrylics over hairspray. I then airbrushed two light coats of grey filter. I then worked in oil paint and acrylics to add some tonal variations and streaks.

    Hi there Brian,

Nice work! Even if I wanted to, there's nothing to b*tch about... I especially like the spend shell cases on the wooden floor. What are they? Brass tubing?
