Warhammer 40k Winter Themed Tank Company Empty Warhammer 40k Winter Themed Tank Company

Post by Will Wright Wed Jan 18, 2012 11:39 am

I cleaned out my hobby room a few weeks ago and sold a bunch of old WH40k stuff I knew I would never paint if I lived to be 300.
So I went and bought some new shiny stuff I would want to paint lickety split.
Case in point a Leman Russ Tank Company of 10 tanks.
The Leman Russ is the standard MBT of the Warhammer Imperial Guard armies.
I am painting a futuristic American army call the 1st Merican Lancers, they are going to be the Big Red One of 40k.
So getting to the first tank have'nt named her yet but I took the stock model and added plastic Rod Welds to a good portion of the hull.
I went for the look of a mechanic welding the bottom hull of one tank to the top of another.
I used 1:35 tank accessories to add light stowage.

Warhammer 40k Winter Themed Tank Company 8883d7b5
Over Black Primer I sprayed Tamiya Hull Red and let this dry for a day to set.

the welding and stowage is a nice touch, fully weathered WH40K is not what you see that often in the WH40K gaming environment, looking forward to follow this one.

Ok progress so far and a learning experience.
First I used masking fluid to make big chips, then I sprayed two layers of chipping fluid.
Kind of a mistake, the chipping fluid seemed to glue down the masking fluid making it harder to remove.
Then I used Tamiya Olive Drab to basecoat the tank.
Then I added Buff and White to lighten the OD and try my hand at light modulation.
Then I removed the chipping fluid.
Kind of messed of the finish by flooding it with too much water,I found it best to dampen an area let it sit a minute then use the GW stipple brush to scuff up the finish.
The Stipple brush is made of ox hair and is real stiff.
The left side of the tank is good but the right got too much scuffed off.
Not too bumed because there is still the winter camo to go over which hopefully will cover the over zelous scuffing.

I went and repainted the tank just the dark basecolor.
While watching the Winter Effects DVD I noticed Migs tanks basecolor was dark with no modulation.
The earlier paintjob is chalked up to training with the chipping fluid.
Warhammer 40k Winter Themed Tank Company Cfce589b
Starting small this time I just did the turret in the winter camo using chipping effects to remove the whitewash.
I think it is a good start, will try to crank out the rest tomarrow.

Wish I agreed with Ya Tobias, but I was looking at it this morning thinking the white was too washed out,not enough for the streaking, sooooooo sanded it down a bit with 20 micron paper and
Back to stage one Tamiya Olive Drab Basecoat.
Though each time I do this the model gets a little better,I figure 3 or 4 more redos and I should have what I am looking for Smile
Winter Camo is hard but then that is why I am doing it to master a new technique.
I was playing with changing to a Testors OD which IMO looks a 1000 times better if the tank was going to stay green but the Tamiya is way darker and will look better chipped up.
This time it is do or die,I added another thing missing the transfers.
This will be tank number 3,(1 and 2 being the CO and XO who will have special tanks)

edit:Here is the redo, funny this is tank # 3 because it took me three times to get the finish the way I like it.
Forgot the Golden Rule of chipping "Less is More".

I was able to finish tank #3's paintjob today.
All that is left is the dust and dried mud but that will wait a bit, might wait until I have 2 more finished then I'll do three at once.

I finished the build for number 4.
Stowage is better placed ,paying more attention to straps.
If you have the Tamiya 1:35 German jerry can set the fuel caps look like very convincing strap brackets like the kind you see on semi loads.
I cast a bunch of the stowage such as bedrolls and they cme out really well.
I would like to try to make fitted stowage pieces on card with pinoner tools that you could just glue in place and save on the amount of pickaxes and shovels I buy.
Like last tank I added welds like last time this time with brass strip brackets I made buy cutting brass etch sprue.
I have a new antenne design that I am going to use on the last tank too.
24 guage wire that is stripped to all but a 1/2 inch then I drill a 1/4 hole in the mast and insert antenne.
